APPLICATIONS OF PORLA
STABILITY AND COMPATIBILITY ANALYZERS:
1. Optimization of the
operation of cracking units of oil refineries:
Monitoring of the operation of refining units e.g. visbreakers,
hydrocrackers and catalytic crackers by determining stability and
compatibility parameters of residual products and feed stocks of the
processes using Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP) stabilitity and
compatibility model. As the result of analyses P-value, FR5/1,
Xylene/Toluene equivalent, FRmax, Xmin, Pa and Po, as well as
correlation coefficient r2 are reported. Substitution of
manual stability determination methods by significantly higher
precision Porla enables running of the process closer to the severity
limit i.e ”squeezing” of the process resulting in profitability
improvement by millions of euros annually.
2. Determining
compatibility of heavy and crude oil blends upon
blending of heavy fuel oils and crude oils for refinery feed stocks:
Determining compatibility parameters of heavy and crude oils mixtures
upon blending to prevent production of fuel oil and crude oil blends
that have incompatibility risk in their use or further processing.
Applications are blending of heavy fuel oil from different refinery
streams, blending of crude oil streams coming from different production
fields for transporting in a larger pipeline and making of crude oil
blends for feed stocks of oil refineries. The analyzer reports
ExxonMobil heavy and crude oil compatibility parameters In and Sbn as a
result of the analytical procedure. The cost savings achievable by
preventing production problems due to use of incompatible crude oil
blends as refinery feed stocks are even much bigger than those obtained
by optimization of individual refinery units, possibly tens of millions
of euros annually.
3. Determining solubility
parameters of bitumen:
Determining stability of bitumen in terms of three-dimensional
solubility parameters by BISOM titrations according to the Nynäs
Bitumen solubility model. As a result of the analytical procedure
the analyzer reports da, do, D, na, no,
N, ha, ho and H (Nynäs BISOM model parameters). BISOM
parameters can be used to predict compatibility between different
bitumens as well as compatibility with polymers and also the
behaviour of the bitumen on oxidation and ageing.
Our role is not limited to selling analyzers, but offering solutions to
our customers. We want to help our customers to have a fast and smooth
start with our Porla analyzers. In each Porla analyzer delivery is
included an operator training/application built-up period during which
our experts participate in the application built-up work at customer
laboratory using a representative range of customer’s own
products/materials.
4. Realization of research
equipments
Besides developing, manufacturing and selling Porla analyzers FMS
experts carry out realization of research equipments e.g. chemical
bench scale reactors and their data collection systems according to
needs of our customers in oil and chemical industry. Our experts are
ready to realize customers’ research equipment projects according to
the key in hand principle.
